WEBSITE ADDITION!

I'm pleased to introduce a new page on ShannonONeill.us : a video gallery! Although I have already posted these same clips on My YouTube Channel (and will continue to keep that account active), I felt that this would be an excellent addition to my own website as well.

I have also added a sidebar link to my Facebook page in 'Contact and Booking'. My profile has been made open to the public in order to continue maximizing networking potential!

Thanks, enjoy and have a fantastic day! ;)

The "Fitness Challenge" Continues!

My second “Fitness Challenge” session in the Lima City Schools went very well! Yesterday’s lesson focused on making positive food choices, especially when at a crossroads between two seemingly identical items.

The central theme of session two? You can’t go wrong choosing food in its most natural state! Say “No, thank you!” to the refined, artificial and overly-processed. Anything that grows out of the ground and/or bypasses typical food “modifications” is just about guaranteed to promote one's wellbeing!

In order to drive this point home, I led an interactive game called “Fab or Flab?”. This allows students to guess whether or not certain food items contribute to their health and fitness goals. However, I enjoy taking this lesson one step further by actually SHOWING our children and adolescents why certain food items can be so detrimental to their growth, strength, and overall wellness potential! For example, I hear audible gasps whenever I pass a can of Pepsi around the room...plus a Ziploc bag displaying the amount of sugar in just one serving: 14 teaspoons! And would you believe that Mountain Dew contains 20 TEASPOONS per serving?

Take a look at a few photos from today’s lesson:

There are 5 teaspoons in ONE stick of gum (i.e. Juicy Fruit and Bubble Yum. A healthier alternative would, of course, be sugar free gum)!

After our nutrition lesson, I shared a kid-friendly fitness dance that I choreographed with the students! Everyone had fun grooving to Corbin Bleu’s “Push It to the Limit” (it may be a Disney song, but the lyrics are so motivational and I run to it on the treadmill all the time, haha)! Today I’ll be boarding a plane for Fordham University once again...it’s been a wonderful, productive weekend and I look forward to upcoming appearances in the near future! :)

Getting Off to a Great Start!

Last night at Howard Johnson Hotel's "Pavillion" performance space, we held our very first "Wish Upon A Song" audition! There was a spectacular turn-out; each contestant shared his/her talent and enthusiasm with the crowd and judges. It was especially fun hosting this event because everyone involved (competitors and audience members alike!) displayed such livliness all throughout the night. Look below for photos...

ADDITIONALLY: I am so pleased to report that my good friend Monica Bates became Ohio's Junior Miss 2010 last night! She is a tremendously talented, hard-working, beautiful and deserving young woman. I wish her all the best at America's Junior Miss this summer in Mobile, Alabama!

Monica is a former Miss West Central Ohio Outstanding Teen and Miss Limaland Outstanding Teen. She is an accomplished dancer and singer, and recently won "Ohio's Got Talent."

The "Fitness Challenge" Begins!

On Monday, February 1st, I kicked off my five-month "Fitness Challenge" in the Lima City School System! I have had a fantastic time over the past three years promoting my platform by working with students in small groups and in school assemblies. However, I particularly enjoy leading more extensive city-wide health and fitness programs for our youth for the following reasons:
  1. We meet multiple times over the course of the program.
  2. I have the amazing opportunity to meet, befriend and interact with a number of children and adolescents from my hometown.
  3. By receiving the participants questions and coming to know their unique interests, I am able to tailor portions of the program to their own wants and needs.
  4. It is an unbeatable moment for me, personally, when I begin to witness the great strides our youth are making as each session goes by.
That being said, I was so thrilled to visit Heritage Elementary School's 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms for our very first of seven Fitness Challenge sessions! Take a look at some of the fun we had on February 1st by viewing the photos below (cue music: "Getting to Know You" from the King & I! haha):

My favorite question of the day: "Shannon, my uncle is doing the Atkins diet and he is always super grumpy because he can't eat certain food like bread. If I want to eat healthy and feel healthy, do I need to do this diet too?!!" lol ;)

Each and every child displayed a tremendous amount of energy, excitement and determination; such positive attitudes can serve as motivation for anyone hoping to take their health and fitness to the next level. I can't wait until our second session on Monday, February 22nd!

Hello Again, World Wide Web!

I'm breathing a sigh of relief right now! Evidently, my mac was not the problem; attempting to run Parallels software on my computer was the culprit all along! Unfortunately, losing the Windows "Virtual Machine" that I had been depending on meant that I needed to learn how to operate NEW web design software ASAP...

So! Here you have it: out with the old (XSitePro2) and in with the new (Rapidweaver)! It's taken me a bit to re-format things, but I hope you all fancy the new and improved www.ShannonONeill.us

I look forward to giving you all a thorough update in the near future. As always, I have some fun news that I'm excited to share with you! Thanks so much for your understanding and patience. It's good to be back. :)

Final Miss America Week Update

Guess who needs to order a new Mac?? I'm going on my third try attempting to publish this entry before everything crashes on me again! No worries though, I will still provide updates between now and when my replacement laptop arrives; unfortunately it will be on my computer's time instead of my own (i.e. "Will it work for me today...or not?" lol)! At any rate, here are the videos I took on the final night of Miss America Week, when Virginia's Caressa Cameron was crowned!

VIDEO 1: Miss Ohio 2009, Erica Gelhaus, being introduced by Sam Haskell
VIDEO 2: Erica being greeted by friends and family after the final night of competition
VIDEO 3: Miss America 2010 speaking at contestant visitation after her very first press conference!

Thanks everyone for following www.ShannonONeill.us and
@MissLSF during my stay in Vegas! I look forward to updating you as I work diligently on my platform, prepare for Miss Ohio 2010, and generally enjoy life as a young woman of today! :)
