The "Fitness Challenge" Continues!
The central theme of session two? You can’t go wrong choosing food in its most natural state! Say “No, thank you!” to the refined, artificial and overly-processed. Anything that grows out of the ground and/or bypasses typical food “modifications” is just about guaranteed to promote one's wellbeing!
In order to drive this point home, I led an interactive game called “Fab or Flab?”. This allows students to guess whether or not certain food items contribute to their health and fitness goals. However, I enjoy taking this lesson one step further by actually SHOWING our children and adolescents why certain food items can be so detrimental to their growth, strength, and overall wellness potential! For example, I hear audible gasps whenever I pass a can of Pepsi around the room...plus a Ziploc bag displaying the amount of sugar in just one serving: 14 teaspoons! And would you believe that Mountain Dew contains 20 TEASPOONS per serving?
Take a look at a few photos from today’s lesson:
Contrasting white and wheat bread:

There are 5 teaspoons in ONE stick of gum (i.e. Juicy Fruit and Bubble Yum. A healthier alternative would, of course, be sugar free gum)!

After our nutrition lesson, I shared a kid-friendly fitness dance that I choreographed with the students! Everyone had fun grooving to Corbin Bleu’s “Push It to the Limit” (it may be a Disney song, but the lyrics are so motivational and I run to it on the treadmill all the time, haha)! Please take a minute to WATCH THE VIDEO HERE!
Today I’ll be boarding a plane for Fordham University once again...it’s been a wonderful, productive weekend and I look forward to upcoming appearances in the near future! :)
Getting Off to a Great Start!

Congratulations to our fabulous youth and adult finalists who have qualified for the televised rounds of competition!

ADDITIONALLY: I am so pleased to report that my good friend Monica Bates became Ohio's Junior Miss 2010 last night! She is a tremendously talented, hard-working, beautiful and deserving young woman. I wish her all the best at America's Junior Miss this summer in Mobile, Alabama!
Monica is a former Miss West Central Ohio Outstanding Teen and Miss Limaland Outstanding Teen. She is an accomplished dancer and singer, and recently won "Ohio's Got Talent."

Thanks for stopping by!

The "Fitness Challenge" Begins!
- We meet multiple times over the course of the program.
- I have the amazing opportunity to meet, befriend and interact with a number of children and adolescents from my hometown.
- By receiving the participants’ questions and coming to know their unique interests, I am able to tailor portions of the program to their own wants and needs.
- It is an unbeatable moment for me, personally, when I begin to witness the great strides our youth are making as each session goes by.
Talking over the basics of the program, and finding out what their individual questions and interests are regarding health and fitness!
My favorite question of the day: "Shannon, my uncle is doing the Atkins diet and he is always super grumpy because he can't eat certain food like bread. If I want to eat healthy and feel healthy, do I need to do this diet too?!!" lol ;)

Getting up out of their seats and taking a fun, ACTIVE break from the ordinary school day!

Each and every child displayed a tremendous amount of energy, excitement and determination; such positive attitudes can serve as motivation for anyone hoping to take their health and fitness to the next level. I can't wait until our second session on Monday, February 22nd!
P.S. Find out how The Children's Miracle Network (the national platform of the Miss America Organization!) is helping promote fitness for the whole family in my latest eArticle.
